Arctic
: a friend acting strangely : forces of change (Smithsonian National
Museum of Natural History)
This exhibit from 2006 is part of the museum's Forces of Change series which
explores the impacts of climate change in the Arctic. Information is available
in the form of text, images and interactive animations. Includes climate
change observations in the Arctic, the shrinking of sea ice and its effects.
Arctic
Survey Education
The Catlin Arctic Survey captured much-needed data about the state of the
ice in the delicately balanced ecosystem. This website follows the survey
and looks at the findings.
Bureau
of Meteorology Research Centre
The climate change web pages of Australia's official weather service.
Climate
Ark
Performs full text searches on educational and activist Websites. Also
includes an archive of "popular media and environmental group information"
on climate change and other environmental topics.
Climatic Research Unit
Recognized as one of the world's leading institutions concerned with the study of natural and anthropogenic climate change.
Discovery
of global warming (American Institute of Physics)
An extensive introduction to the topic and the history of its discovery,
written by Spencer R. Weart. The entire site is searchable, with the table
of contents acting as a site map. The whole resource can be downloaded as
a zip file, or individual essays can be printed out as PDF files. Alternatively
the whole site is available on a CD-ROM.
Earth's
fidgeting climate (Patrick L Barry of Science at NASA)
This article addresses issues associated with changing climates upon the
Earth focusing on the question, 'Is human activity warming the Earth or
do recent signs of climate change signal natural variations? Scientists
discuss the vexing ambiguities of our planet's complex and unwieldy climate'.
A link to an audio version of this article is also provided which requires
RealPlayer.
European Union Web site about
global warming
This site provides information about climate change and tips on what we
as individuals can do to help bring it under control.
Intergovernmental
Panel on climate change
Established in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization and the United
Nations Environment Programme to assess the available scientific, technical,
and socio-economic information in the field of climate change.
NASA
finds sun-climate connection in old Nile records
Since the time of the pharaohs in ancient Egypt, the water levels of the
Nile were accurately measured. Long-term climate records are a key to understanding
how Earth's climate changed in the past and how it may change in the future.
These old records are a unique resource for climatologists.
NASA
Global climate change : vital signs of the planet
Current news and data streams about global warming and climate change from NASA.
The
NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) (at Columbia University)
Aims to assist the study of natural and human processes that influence
Earth's climate. Source of information about the upper atmosphere, atmospheric
dynamics, and the global biosphere. Several educational resources are
included, plus a number of links to further online resources.
NASA
Visable Earth
NASA searchable directory of photographs, animations and images of the
Earth's atmosphere and surface. It can also be browsed by subject, satellite
or sensor, and location. The images can be used freely if credit is given
to NASA and are available in several different formats.
Nature
Reports Climate Change
Provides in-depth reporting, comment and analysis on climate science and
its wider implications for policy, society and the economy. Nature is a
weekly international interdisciplinary journal of science.
Newest reports on United States EPA Web site
Provides the latest climate change-related news releases from the Environmental
Protection Agency and other agencies.
NOAA's
global warming FAQ (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration)
This page provides a brief introduction to global warming and a list of
frequently asked questions. The questions include: what is the greenhouse
effect, and is it affecting our climate; are greenhouse gases increasing;
is the climate warming; is the hydrological cycle (evaporation and precipitation)
changing; is atmospheric/oceanic circulation changing; and is sea level
rising. Links within the text provide access to additional information.
A resource list of further links is also available.
Pew
Center on Global Climate Change
This independent, not-for-profit organisation is dedicated to providing
credible information, straight answers, and innovative solutions in the
effort to address climate change. The Centre aims to bring together business
leaders, policy makers, scientists and other experts to bring a new approach
to the controversial issue of global climate change. The site covers global
warming at both basic and detailed levels, as well as detailing policies
on climate change and the measures which are being taken to combat the
problem.
Photographic
documentation of climate change (World view of global warming)
This photographic collection site by Gary Braasch visually documents climate change from the Arctic to Antarctica, from glaciers to the oceans, across all climate zones including the tropics, England and the Polar regions. Images are accessible via a clickable world map. Each of the instances are from peer reviewed published studies; in some cases historical photographs have been included as a comparison. Data, references and links to related sites are provided.
Science
Daily Global Warming news section
Learn about the causes and effects of global warming. Consider possible
global warming solutions. Read predictions of rising sea levels, coral
reef bleaching and mass extinctions climate change may cause.
Scott Polar Research Institute
The oldest research center in the world covering both the Arctic and Antarctic.
The
UK Met Office climate change page
This page on climate change produced originally by the Hadley Centre and
now hosted by the Met Office provides links to where users may obtain
climate model and observed data, downloads of briefing sheets on aspects
of the climate system may be obtained, covering subjects such as climate
modelling, monitoring, predictions and the carbon cycle. Lists of Hadley
Centre publications may be obtained, in addition to up-to-the-minute press
releases. The Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research, part
of the UK Meteorological Office provides the UK government with up-to-date
assessments of both natural and man-made climate change and is the world's
leading climate change research institution, providing climate projections
from their models used extensively in the IPCC reports.
